Grand View Graduates Succeed in Difficult Economy, Remain in Iowa

The most recent Grand View graduating class secured 98% job placement within 6 months of graduation. With the current lagging labor market, the unemployment rate of 16-24 year-olds in Iowa is higher than 10%. A recent survey shows that members of the Grand View University Class of 2012 are succeeding in spite of high unemployment by turning their college education into careers or continuing their education at graduate schools.

Conducted annually by the University’s Office of Career Services, the personalized survey, to which nearly every graduate from the class of 336 responded, provides a “snapshot” in time in the lifelong career development of graduates. Most of the class of 2011-2012 stayed in Iowa, particularly within the Des Moines metropolitan area, after graduation – an astounding 97% of those employed. Nearly all graduates who moved out of state did so in order to further their educations, most with the intention of returning. The top employers include Iowa Health Systems, Wells Fargo, Mercy Medical Center, Nationwide, Des Moines Public Schools, and Principal Financial Group. Grand View’s placement rates have reached 95 – 100% every year for the past 20 years.

“There’s been an increasing focus nationally on ‘outcomes’ in higher education and on ways to measure results,” observes Grand View President Kent Henning. “Given that the purpose of a college education is to prepare graduates for successful careers and productive lives that contribute to communities, we think there’s no better ‘outcome’ than the employment of our graduates and their commitment to central Iowa.  Education, once achieved, creates value for a lifetime. And in an economic downturn, a college degree can actually increase in value. That value accrues to our businesses and communities, as well as to our graduates.”
