and Behind-the-Wheel Authorization

Driver Education Endorsement

Earn your Driver Education Endorsement or Behind-the-Wheel authorization in our accelerated Driver Education Program.  Any student who successfully completes the Driver Education I and II courses may be authorized to teach the Behind-the-Wheel component of driver education. Iowa licensed secondary education (5-12) teachers and K-12 art, music, and physical education teachers may earn the Driver and Safety Education 7-12 Endorsement #118 by successfully completing the following courses: Driver Education I, II, and Traffic Safety and Accident Prevention. Iowa licensed elementary education (K-6) teachers must complete an appropriate driver education-related practicum at the secondary education (5-12) level in addition to the other required coursework.

Teacher Academy

Grand View's summer Teacher Academy for Endorsements is designed for licensed teachers. Classes are scheduled within convenient two-week sessions offered during June and July. You may attend one, two, three or all four of the Academy sessions.

Driver's Education, BTW, and Academy courses are affordable at $355 per credit hour. Payment must be made by the first class day.

Application/Registration Process

  • Complete the CPAL application and fax a copy of your current teaching license to 515-263-2974, Attn. Admissions Department. For BTW students, the application is not necessary; contact the enrollment counselor at (515) 263-6183 to register.
  • Request official transcripts from all colleges you've attended to be sent directly to Grand View University, Attn. Admissions Department.
  • Once you have been admitted to Grand View, your enrollment counselor will contact you and register you for your courses.

Driver and Safety Education (Endorsement #118)

Required Courses

The courses below are offered in a blended format, combining classroom experiences with online interaction:

EDUC 332 Driver Education I    3 credits
Course Dates: Sept 14 – Oct 17
Classroom Meetings:
Saturdays: Sept 19 and Oct 17; 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This course teaches students how to organize a driver and safety education program and how to use class time to meet state regulations.  This course also explores different techniques and methods for teaching driver education.

EDUC 333 Driver Education II    3 credits
Course Dates: Sept 14 – Oct 17, online, work with instructor to schedule driving times.

Students in this course spend time in the classroom as well as 16 supervised hours in the car helping beginning student drivers develop skills and attitudes that support safe and responsible driving.  There is also a one-time evaluation meeting with each student.  This course is given on a pass/fail basis.  Students who earn a grade of C or better receive three semester hours of credit.

EDUC 331 Traffic Safety & Accident Prevention    3 credits
Online Course Dates: Oct 19 – Dec 12

This class is designed for students who are seeking teacher licensure in Driver and Safety Education and for individuals who wish to be approved to provide instruction in commercial driving schools in the state of Iowa.  Class instruction addresses traffic safety and accident prevention issues.  Students also visit selected accident sites and car repair facilities in the Des Moines area.  Must have proof of Iowa teaching license.

Reading Endorsement (#148 for K-8, #149 for 5 - 12)
