Job Description:
Iowa State University - Center for Biorenewable Chemicals NSF- Engineering Research Center’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Engineering Research Center’s Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) will host REU students who will work toward achieving CBiRC’s core mission of transforming the US chemical industry by integrating biological and chemical catalysis systems to produce biorenewable chemicals. The REU students will work in CBiRC labs conducting fundamental research to address the underlying technical challenges in the development of new integrated catalytic systems for the conversion of bio-based feedstocks to industrial chemicals. In 2013, the REU program will enroll a class of 14 students, with all students spending the first five days in the program at the Iowa State University site. While a large portion of the REU students will remain at Iowa State University, a number of the students will then travel to either the University of Madison, Wisconsin or the Salk Institute partnering with the University of California, Irvine (depending on their research interests) to complete their summer program at a partner lab. These students will maintain contact with the REU program through distance technologies for weekly meetings, seminars. All students will return to Iowa State University the last week of the program for the culmination events and final presentations. REU’s will work in the following areas: 1. Biocatalysts for pathway engineering 2. Microbial metabolic engineering 3. Chemical catalyst design 4. Life cycle analysis of biorenewable chemicals PROGRAM INCLUDES • Hands-on research in state-of-the-art facilities • Seminars and workshops • Group social activities and closing poster session • Program dates are May 29 – August 3 ELIGIBILITY • Undergraduate students majoring in science or engineering • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident • Minorities and women strongly encouraged to apply AWARD • $4,500 stipend • Travel allowance • Room and board Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis beginning February 1. Formal review of applications begins at this time. The final application deadline is March 15. Selections will be based on a combination of research interests, academic qualifications, and faculty recommendations. All materials, including faculty recommendations must be received by March 15. All admission decisions will be made by April 15. For more information or to apply, visit: www.cbirc.iastate.edu/education/university/nsf-reu/
