Iowa Public Radio (IPR) seeks a dedicated and experienced professional to join our staff as Managing Editor - News. Located in the Des Moines office, the Managing Editor supervises IPR’s reporting and editing staffs as well as national news program hosts and oversees their daily newsgathering efforts to provide timely, high-quality news and feature coverage for broadcast, web, and mobile. The Managing Editor supervises all news gathering activity, determines priorities and makes assignments. The Managing Editor will originate and /or approve concepts for long form pieces, features, and series and serve as primary editor. The Managing Editor is responsible for skill development and performance progress among staffs s/he directs. The Managing Editor helps maintain IPR’s high standards for journalistic quality with a commitment to IPR’s mission. POSITION SALARY RANGE: • $46,502 - $65,103 BENEFITS: IPR offers a very competitive benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance, employer and employee contributions towards a retirement fund, and paid vacation and sick leave.
Job Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university in Journalism, Broadcasting or related field; • Significant broadcast experience, preferably including public radio, with 7 or more years of reporting, editing or producing experience; • Experience in maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including objectivity, balance and fairness; • Significant experience providing work direction or supervisory experience; and • Significant experience assigning stories, features and managing breaking news coverage. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: • Strong writing and editing skills are essential including knowledge of broadcast journalism standards, trends and issues; • Knowledge of public radio and reporting treatments for audio and web; • Ability to make quick command decisions; • Ability to motivate, train and grow employees; • Ability to consistently work well with others and to inspire and lead the staff; • Ability to work collegially and creatively with staff and colleagues at all levels of experience; • Strong communication skills and passion for building relationships internally and externally; • Flexibility and ability to respond to changing priorities; • Demonstrated research skills in a professional capacity; • Editing and oversight skills with the ability to oversee development of deep reporting on complex issues; and • Commitment to public service journalism.
