Viking Wrestlers Ranked Second in Nation


The Grand View wrestling program continues to make Viking athletic history, coming in ranked as the No 2 team in today’s NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 Poll. The Vikings moved up one spot from the last Top 20 Poll.

Second-ranked Grand View (Iowa) obtained its highest team ranking of the season, taking over the No. 2 spot with 89 points and 10 ranked individuals. The Vikings have steadily climbed up the ranks since being listed eighth in the preseason poll.
Ranked individually for the Vikings are: Alex Peitz (8th – 125 lbs.), Omi Acosta (2nd – 133 lbs.), Travis Evans (4th – 133 lbs.), Nick Coffman (6th – 141 lbs.), Jeff Rau (8th  – 141 lbs.), Matt Burns (4th – 149 lbs.), Ty Knowler (12th – 165 lbs.), Glenn Rhees (2nd – 174 lbs.), Tommy Perez (8th – 184 lbs.), and Derek Nightser (8th – 197 lbs.).
For the 11th-consecutive poll, Notre Dame (Ohio) obtained the No. 1 ranking. The Falcons totaled 134 points in the fourth edition of the poll with 11 ranked individuals, including a trio of grapplers listed No. 1 in their respective weight class. Great Falls (Mont.) slides into the No. 3 spot with 79.5 points courtesy of seven listed wrestlers. Missouri Valley is fourth with 78 points and eight ranked grapplers, followed by No. 5 Campbellsville (Ky.) with 77 points and seven listed individuals.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the groupings. The next poll will be announced on Jan. 25.
