Burns National Champion; Vikings Fifth at NAIA Wrestling Championships

The Grand View wrestling program added another national champion with senior Matt Burns (Urbandale, Iowa) winning 5-3 in the title match at 149 pounds. With the title and Glenn Rhees’ second place finish, Grand View scored 106 points at the NAIA Championships with seven All-Americans and finished fifth overall in the team standings; the highest finish in the program’s short three-year history.
Burns, the 2009 national champion at 149, came into the match ranked No. 3 and defeated Ashtin Primus of Notre Dame College to capture his second national championship.
At 174 pounds, No. 3 ranked senior Rhees (Atascadero, Calif.) took top-rated Chris Chionuma of Lindenwood to the wire, ending with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. Rhees was national champion at 174 in 2010.

In addition to Burns and Rhees, also earning All-American status for Grand View was: Tommy Perez (184) and Derek Nightser (197) who placed fifth, Travis Evans (133) sixth, and Adam Kurimski (149) and Bojan Djukic (Hwt) who were eighth.
