Grand View Students Shine at College Media Association Competition
Students from two Grand View publications won recognition in a national design competition from the College Media Association, announced Thursday. Chad Kriz, a journalism and graphic journalism senior, was recognized in three categories for his work on ALT, the Grand View student magazine, and on The Grand Views, Grand View's student newspaper. Also honored were 2011 graduates Hallie Beeler, Senid Tabakovic and Amanda Wilson.
The College Media Association's 2011 Best of Collegiate Design competition includes entries from colleges and universities of all sizes across the country. Kriz and Tabakovic designed a spread on hot spots along 4th Street for the 2011 issue of ALT. The design won second place for Best Contents Page/Spread and honorable mention for Headline Presentation for incorporating a "four" in the headline. The judges said: "Very clean. The use of the '4' as part of a street layout is nicely done. An eye-catching package."
Among the other winners in the category were students from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and the University of South Carolina. Kriz was also awarded fourth place for Best Nameplate/Standing Head for his October redesign of The Grand Views front page to incorporate a haunted Humphrey Center on Halloween. Beeler and Wilson won fourth place in Magazine Feature Spread category for a design in ALT on Grand View graduate Emily Svec's body painting art. Drake University was the only other Iowa university to win awards in this year's competition.
