Vikings Win MCC Tournament Championship, Advance to Nationals

The Grand View men's soccer team adds another achievement to this already special season as they win the 2012 MCC Conference Tournament with their hard fought 3-1 win over the No. 2 seeded Mount Mercy Mustangs.  With this win, the Vikings receive the automatic bid to the NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament.  The Vikings were also the regular season MCC champions.

The last time these two teams met the game went into two overtime periods and ended in a 0-0 draw.  The Vikings found the back of the net first in the 20th minute of play with a goal by sophomore midfielder Brian Lee (Glasgow, Scotland).  He was assisted by senior forward Noel Medina (Urbandale, Iowa).

The Mustangs would respond with a goal of their own a short six minutes later by Ramiro Alonso as he slotted the ball past senior goalkeeper Conor Thomas (Dublin, Ireland) on a breakaway.  With time running out in the first half, the Vikings score the go-ahead goal in the 42nd minute of play to shift momentum back their way.  This time Medina scores his eighth goal on the season for the Vikings and he was assisted by sophomore midfielder Aaron Scott (Dunbar, Scotland).

Grand View would head into the break with a 2-1 lead of the Mustangs as the first half was evenly played.  Both teams with 1 corner kick apiece and the Vikings edged out the Mustangs on shots, 5-4.

The Vikings gained momentum and much of the possession in the second half of play.  Freshman forward Andrew McLeavy (Congelton, England) would seal the victory for GV as he was on the receiving end of a cross from the left side of the field.  McLeavy headed the ball past goalkeeper Harrison Burgess to extend the Vikings lead to 3-1.  The ball was played in by junior midfielder Austin Kelly (Ottumwa, Iowa).

Thomas saw 67 minutes of action and made three saves until he collided with a Mustang forward causing him to leave the field.  Junior goalkeeper Erik Hundevad (Burnsville, Minnesota) filled in for the remainder of the game.

The Vikings will find out where they are headed and their next opponent on Sunday November 11th when the NAIA Men's Soccer Championship brackets are released.
