Graduate Education launched by Grand View University

At a press conference November 6, President Kent Henning announced the launch of graduate education at Grand View, as well as the adoption of the name Grand View University.

Grand View's first graduate program, which will enroll its initial cohort of students in the fall of 2009, is the Master of Science in Innovative Leadership. This interdisciplinary degree, which focuses on leading for change and innovative strategic thinking, is composed of a common core of courses and three "tracks" - business, education and nursing.

The name change will be gradually reflected throughout all aspects of Grand View, from the new logo to a new Web address: www.grandview.edu. To learn more about the MS in Innovative Leadership, please go to www.grandview.edu and click Graduate Students.

2008 Homecoming/Studenterfest Recap

This year's homecoming was historic in many ways, starting with the combining of Homecoming and Studenterfest! Alumni were invited back to campus Friday, October 3, for a continental breakfast before the Alumni College series held in the Rodholm Room. The annual President's Club Dinner was held that evening, honoring Grand View donors and the class of 1948 and 1958 celebrating their 50- and 60- year reunions. Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame awards were also presented.

Saturday morning brought a plethora of events and excitement as students, alumni and the community started the day off bright and early with the Viking 5K, which set a new record in attendance, and the Homecoming parade. In conjunction with Homecoming/Studenterfest activities, an open house was held at the Rasmussen Center for Community Advancement Professions. Guests were free to tour the new academic building and children enjoyed bounce houses, a slide and face painting.

At two o'clock that afternoon, the Grand View Viking football team took the field at Williams Stadium. The Homecoming dance, later that evening, was hosted at the Iowa Events Center in downtown Des Moines. Sunday morning brought the traditional Aebleskive breakfast at Luther Memorial Church, with worship service afterward.

GV graphic design majors compete in Crossroads Competition

Congratulations to GV graphic design majors Danielle Ameling, Ashlee Humphrey, Lacee Jondal, Kristi Knapp, Angela Johnston, and Jeppe Ritz for winning the 2008 Crossroads Competition. The team competed with other teams from Drake, Simpson, and UNI in creating marketing campaigns for six Iowa bands.

Grand View's team worked with the Honeybees, a local Americana rock group. The competition was judged by professionals from state-wide marketing firms and media outlets.

The materials created by the GV team consisted of a press kit containing the band's ep, an interactive DVD, and two event posters. In addition, the group produced hand silk screened posters and t- shirts. The kit itself is a hand-bound book resembling a 78 rpm album. A videotaped interview produced by the group is posted on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6NqbHapaRc.

The Crossroads Conference and Showcase, in its third year, brings together entertainment professionals from across the state and upper Midwest working in music, theatre, comedy, film, special events, sports, tourism, and food and beverage. This year's event was held Wednesday, December 3, and Thursday, December 4, at multiple venues in the Court Avenue District in Des Moines.

Grand View football season comes to an end

August 30 will be a date that will go down in the record books as historic. For the first time in Grand View history, the Viking football team took the field at Williams Stadium and made an historic 20-17 win against Briar Cliff University. The Vikings ended the season with an overall record of 2-8. Although this inaugural season has proved to be a tough run for the Vikings, that has not dampened their spirits or hindered their determination for the next year.
