Grand View Alumni @ Iowa Energy recap

Approximately 100 alumni reunited in the Bud Room at Wells Fargo Arena and enjoyed an evening of appetizers, drink and a high voltage basketball game featuring the Iowa Energy against the Erie Bay Hawks February 11. Alumni received special discounted tickets and were entered into drawings for GV gear, Iowa Energy items and an MP3 player. Kim Foltz '95 sang the national anthem at the start of the game. Trevor Jamieson '00 and Terry Rice '69 were the two lucky alumni to participate in the game on the court during halftime.

Grand View Faculty/Staff "Spotlight"

In our upcoming e-newsletters, we will "spotlight" a Grand View faculty or staff member. This issue features Carey Jury, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies.

Major: Accounting ('70). Grand View was a two-year institution when Jury attended.

Position: Interim Dean of Graduate Studies. On an interim basis, Jury is launching the new Master of Science in Innovative Leadership program. He retired from Principal Financial Group in June 2008 where he served as Senior Vice President and was responsible for the Health Division. When he attended the first Grand View football game, he met the new Provost, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Stivers. She called a few weeks later and asked Jury to consider being the interim dean, which he accepted. Jury will hold the position through June of this year.

Family: Jury is married to Ann, and they have two children, Rob and Kristin, who are both grown and married. They also have four grandchildren: Grant, Dillon, Katelyn and Zachary.

Hobbies: Jury enjoys reading, traveling, jogging and cooking.

What he likes best about working at Grand View: Jury has been a trustee on the Grand View Board for a number of years and knew many of the people well. However, Jury said it is different when you get to work directly with the staff and professors. He said the GV community has been extremely helpful and has gone out of their way to help him when needed. There are truly so many great people at Grand View and it makes this a very exciting place to be at this time.

Favorite memory of Grand View: Jury has many great memories of Grand View, including meeting his wife. He was part of a musical group that performed on campus called the TK5. He recalls how helpful professors were and one, Mrs. Wilkinson, had a big impact on him and was a great mentor.

What brought him back to Grand View: Besides Dr. Stivers asking him to consider the position, it was the opportunity to help Grand View launch its first-ever graduate program that brought Jury back to campus.

What have the big changes been since he left Grand View: Jury said the campus is extremely vibrant and is developing more of a campus look and feel, and the number of students living on campus has increased significantly. The name change to University and the graduate program are helping to make this a very exciting time. What hasn't changed is the attention and assistance professors provide for students. The number of students in the classes remains small, and the personal attention students receive will better equip them for future careers.

Four GV wrestlers ranked nationally: freshman Travis Evans (Ankeny, Iowa) moved into the rankings as No. 5 at 125 lbs.; junior Jon Henslee (Libertyville, Ill.) moved up two spots and is the No. 4 wrestler at 141 lbs.; junior Matt Burns (Urbandale, Iowa) is the No. 5 wrestler in the nation at 149 lbs.; and freshman Justin Rau (Council Bluffs, Iowa) is rated No. 5 at 197 lbs.

Viking men's basketball No. 17 in NAIA

The eighth edition of the 2008-09 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll has been announced and the Vikings were voted as No. 17 in the country. GV moved into the top 25 for the second time this season; the team is currently 22-7 overall and 14-2 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.

The Vikings withstood a strong effort by Clarke College (9-23) and pulled away in the second half for a 76-64 victory in the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament on Wednesday, February 25th. The Vikings (24-8) came up just two points short of securing an automatic bid to the National Tournament Sunday, March 1st, falling to Iowa Wesleyan (20-10) 91-90 in front of a packed house. The Viking season may continue if the team gets an at-large bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

Solvang

Over 100 Grand View alumni and friends gathered in Solvang, Calif., to attend the annual Farstrup-Mortensen lecture series. The lecture series has made Solvang, a Danish settlement located just north of Santa Barbara, a popular destination for alumni seeking an early taste of spring and stimulating discussions.

This year's theme was "Religion and Science," with lectures by Dr. George Coyne, S.J. of the Vatican Observatory; Dr. Ted Peters, professor at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary; and Dr. Margaret Race, SETI Institute. The first evening included an alumni reception at the Elverhoj Danish Museum.

The Grand View Alumni Office sponsored a wrap-up luncheon, a family reunion for many who meet every spring for these lectures.

Save the date for next year's lecture series, February 27 and 28, 2010, when the topic will be "Religion and Economics." To see photos of this year's event, click here.

Grand View graduate survey reveals nearly 100% placement

Grand View University students are weathering the current economic storm by turning their college education into careers or continuing their education at graduate schools. The Class of 2008 proved successful in securing 98% placement within 6 months of graduation.

Approximately 97% of the graduates entering the workforce stayed in Iowa. The top employers included: Iowa Health Systems, Mercy Medical Center, Meredith Corporation, Wells Fargo, and Principal Financial Group.

Grand View stands out from other colleges and universities due to our partnerships with leading central Iowa businesses and organizations, which leads to challenging internships and nearly 100% student placement for over a decade and a half.

Employment success may in part be attributed to Grand View's innovative approach to career development as a lifelong process -- and to the quality of education received. Faculty and staff mentors encourage the development of characteristics that help graduates succeed in life and in their careers: engagement with family, church and community; adaptability; confidence; critical thinking; self-discovery; a sense of vocation; lifelong learning; ambition; and risk-taking.
