Featured Alumni
In this issue we feature alumnus Andy Ireland '07,
KCCI
sports reporter. 1. Major: broadcasting and mass communication 2. Position: KCCI Sports Reporter 3. Family: mother, Cheryl; father, Jerry; brother, Monte 4. Hobbies: golf, running, training for first triathlon, live music, watching/playing sports 5. Favorite memory of Grand View: Ireland enjoyed walking across campus, from Jensen to the Student Center, on a crisp fall morning for an 8 a.m. class with the dew on fallen leaves, a coffee from Holy Grounds (when it was in the old house), and a good song on his Ipod. He recalls the beautiful walk and comments that the new campus additions would make it even more enjoyable. 6. What have the big changes been since you've left Grand View: Ireland said the new buildings are amazing. He graduated right before the new student suites were opened
, and
since then the campus has really expanded. The new Rasmussen Center is a work of art itself and is definitely prettier than the parking lot that was once there.

Danish Institute for Study Abroad
Grand View is excited to announce that the university recently signed an agreement with the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS), allowing students to study during summer term, a semester, or a year in Copenhagen, Denmark. Denmark was chosen as the first formal study abroad program because of Grand View's Danish heritage. All classes are conducted in English. For more information about learnin
g
opportunities, please visit the DIS Web site at www.dis.dk, or contact Dr. Ellen Strachota at estrachota@grandview.edu, or 515-263-2848.
Grand View Choir performs in Europe
What started in a Des Moines classroom moved to the front of European cathedrals for ten days as the Grand View University Choir took their voices to Denmark and Germany. The 24-me
mber
choir embarked on a 12-day international tour, spending spring break singing in European churches and cathedrals. To kick off the trip, the choir performed a concert in Minnesota before boarding the plane to perform three concerts in Denmark and three in Germany. To read more about this story, click HERE

Grand View scholarship donor luncheon
Donations made by alumni and friends establish scholarships at Grand View that pave the way toward graduation and demonstrate how great it feels to pay it forward. Each year Grand View hon
ors
these donors at a luncheon with scholarship recipients. This year small luncheons were hosted in the Rodholm Room, which created a relaxed atmosphere to chat with students about future plans and how donor generosity is helping them achieve their dreams.
Grand View's Spotlight on Success Campaign exceeds goal by 30 percent
Launched in October 2006, Grand View's Spotlight on Success Campaign concluded with results that exceed the original campaign goal by 30 percent. The total, approximately $19.6 million, is the largest amount raised in the university's history. Grand View thanks friends, alumni, corporations and everyone who gave generously. The campaign focused on several import
ant
campus initiatives, including a new academic center, the endowment, and support for scholarships and the Grand View Fund. After receiving a campaign challenge from trustee Richard O. Jacobson, who agreed to match all donations, dollar for dollar, up to $4 million, the board of trustees increased the initial $15 million goal to $18 million. The Spotlight on Success Campaign helps Grand View maintain access to higher education for students from all walks of life, ensure their academic success, and achieve outcomes for students that are valued by employers and the community. Among the outcomes that are most valued is the career success of graduates. To read more and see a complete list of donors, please click here.

Grand View offers tuition-free summer courses for unemployed
As a thank-you for the support from the central Iowa community during Grand View's recent capital campaign - and in recognition of the current challenging economy - the university is offering tuition-free summer courses to area residents whose employment has been adversely affected by the economy.Applicants must document their unemployment since October 2008, due to economic conditions, with a letter from the former employer or submit government paperwork indicating the receipt of unemployment benefits. Those who qualify may take up to 18 undergraduate credits, tuition-free, during the 2009 summer terms on a
space-available basis. Students will be responsible for the cost of transportation, books, and other course materials. Students will be registered for the program through an expedited process that doesn't require admission to the university. More information and an application form are available on Grand View's Web site at www.grandview.edu. Click Visitors > Summer Tuition Waiver/Career Workshop.

ReView: the Alumni Art Series - reception for the artists
Submitted
by Ben
Schuh, 2004, Fine Arts & Graphic Design, Grand View alumnus Recently I had the opportunity to be a featured artist in ReView, the first of a series of alumni art exhibits at Grand View University. The exhibition was hung in the gallery of the new Rasmussen Center for Community Advancement Professions. The show was an overall success as well as a strong representation of the UNIQUE talent produced by Grand View's reputable art department.
As a graduate of Grand View I can say with confidence that ReView serves as a symbol of how the university has grown under President Henning's leadership. Over the past five years my artwork has had an opportunity to influence the lives of thousands. It was the direction and teaching I received at Grand View that has enabled me to be the artist I am today. I would like to personally thank the art department,
especially Aaron Tinder, Mary Jones, and Dennis Kaven, for including me in this successful exhibition. As always I strongly recommend Grand View University to anyone who is considering a career in art and is seeking an education in Art or Design. Lastly, I look forward to continuing to watch Grand View grow and mold top-notch artists in years to come. The ReView Alumni Art Series featured work of: Vanja Borcic, Lonnie Carter, John Phillip Davis, Jeremiah Elbel, Sara Fakhraie, Jena Hamilton, Sarah Hill, Kim Hutchison, Scott Kaven, Michelle Lamb, Matt Storms and Zane Vredenburg. Please watch for more information regarding the next ReView Alumni Series Show coming this fall.
