Grand View Alumni @ Shrine Circus
Approximately 45 alumni and their families enjoyed an afternoon at the Shrine Circus Saturday, May 2, at Veterans Auditorium. Alumni received discounted tickets and an exclusive "behind the scenes" tour of the circus provided by the circus ringmaster. The tour included a look at how the event comes together, the animal zone, and visits with the Shrine clowns. To see photos of the event, click here.
Grand View faculty/staff Spotlight
In this issue we feature Kim (McFarland '80) Butler, director of buildings and grounds, Grand View University. Name: Kim (McFarland '80) Butler
Major: Physical Education K-12, Coaching Endorsement Position: Director of Buildings and Grounds Department: Buildings and Grounds Family: Husband, Dave Butler, steps
on,
Aaron Butler Hobbies: Butler cares for 50-plus acres of land that accommodates horses, dogs, cats and flowers. What you like best about working at Grand View: Butler enjoys the faculty, staff and students, and especially the day-to-day fun with her co-workers. She said they have great fun and get a lot done at the same time. Favorite memory of Grand View: Butler has many fond memories from her time at Grand View. As a student, the best time she had was when she worked with Hubert Christensen. During the years she worked for him, she learned a lot. He had a great sense of humor and made work fun. Butler said no one memory sticks out, but the summers were probably the best. Every summer different student workers pass through her shop door and each group is special. Many of them come back to visit and keep Butler and her crew updated on what's been happening with them and others. What brought you back to Grand View: Butler left in 1995 to wo
rk for
the downtown Des Moines YMCA. She said it was a great learning experience but an opportunity to come back to Grand View presented itself and she was glad to come back. What have the big changes been since you've left Grand View: Since she was a student at Grand View, there have been tremendous changes, Butler said. More student housing, athletic fields, academic buildings, parking lots and the closing of Grandview Ave are some of the physical changes. Campus is more connected in every sense. Butler talks to many different people over the course of the year, and everyone is excited about Grand View. They're impressed by the changes that have occurred and can't wait to see what else is coming in the future.
