Justin Womack's Biography

JT Womack is a third year D.M.A. Candidate in Wind Conducting at the University of Iowa where he is a Graduate Teaching Assistant to the University Bands. He serves as a conductor of the concert wind ensembles, as well as a staff member of the Hawkeye Marching Band and Iowa Pep Band.

Prior to his enrollment at the University of Iowa, Mr. Womack was the Director of Bands at Greenbrier Middle School and the Assistant Director at Greenbrier High School in Greenbrier, TN. During his ten years at Greenbrier Middle, the band grew from 55 students in grades 6-8 to 225 students, and consistently received superior ratings and invitations to the Tennessee State Concert Festival.

Mr. Womack holds two degrees from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. In 2005, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, where he studied trombone with Susan K. Smith and graduated Cum Laude. In 2007, he earned a Master of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting where he studied with Mr. Bob Lee, Dr. Gregory Wolynec, Dr. Douglas Droste, and Dr. Andrea Brown, and served as a Graduate Assistant to the Band and Orchestra programs. Mr. Womack holds memberships in the National Association for Music Education, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, College Band Directors’ National Association, National Band Association, Tennessee Bandmasters’ Association, Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, and Iowa Bandmasters’ Association.

Prior to his career as a Music Educator in the state of Tennessee, Mr. Womack held an international career as a Professional Trombonist. In 2007, he was appointed as the Principal Trombonist of the Rome Festival Orchestra in Rome, Italy where he held the position through the entirety of the festival. Additionally, in 2007, he won the position of Principal Trombonist for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Grandeur of the Seas, a position he held for six months prior to beginning his career at Greenbrier Middle. In 2010, he was invited back to the Rome Festival Orchestra to serve as Principal Trombonist, Head Librarian, and Assistant Conductor. Throughout his tenure as the Director of Bands, Mr. Womack maintained a role as an active performer throughout the Middle Tennessee area.

Additional studies include trombone performance at the Aims Festival in Graz, Austria, and further study with Susan K. Smith, Larry Borden, Alan Suska, and Jay Friedman. Further conducting studies include study with Professor John Whitwell, Dr. Andrea Brown, Dr. Gregory Wolynec, Dr. Richard Mark Heidel, Dr. Eric Bush, among others.

Originally from White House, Tennessee, Mr. Womack currently resides in Coralville, Iowa, with his wife Madeline.
