Dr. John Lyden, Liberal Arts Core Director at Grand View, traveled to England and Wales this October to present his research on religion and film at the Gladstone Library in Hawarden, University of Chester, and the Queen's Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Research in Birmingham. He shared there his current work on the second edition of his book, Film as Religion: Myths, Morals, and Rituals which he is completing as part of his fall sabbatical. The book will be published by NYU Press later in 2019. The first edition (2003) has been utilized as a text for university religion and film classes in the United Kingdom and Canada as well as in the United States.
Dr. Lyden also recently published a book that he co-edited with Ken Derry, The Myth Awakens: Canon, Conservativism, and Fan Reception of Star Wars (Wipf and Stock, 2018). This collection of essays includes a chapter by Lyden, "The More Things Change: Historical Political Context and The Force Awakens," as well as one by Grand View Professor of English, Josh Call, "Do, or Do Not; There is No Try: Race, Rhetoric, and Diversity in the Star Wars Universe."
