Grand View Receives Hometown Hero Award
Grand View University has been recognized for its commitment to the community, Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Des Moines Area Sports Commission through various acts of generosity, volunteerism, visitor services, donations and partnerships with Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau/Des Moines Area Sports Commission staff, clients and partners.
On November 13th, the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission honored local individuals and businesses that have helped make the last fiscal year a success at the organization’s Annual Celebration. Grand View received the Hometown Hero award.
A hometown hero is someone who facilitates bringing meetings and events to Greater Des Moines. Sometimes, the success or failure of efforts to bring in groups hinges on whether or not there is local support for that event. Grand View was founded in 1896. In 2008 a name change was made and enrollment increased to over 2300 students. With new housing built, GV agreed to partner with the Des Moines Area Sports Commission on the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships. In the last few years several new sports have been added, including football and wrestling. These additional sports bring in visiting teams and their fans who all impact the local economy. Grand View has won numerous awards including the MCC Commissioner's Cup, 13 of 18 possible conference championships and the Five Star Champions of Character award. Grand View not only hosted the 2012 NAIA National Wrestling Championships but won the event, becoming National Champs. GV will also be hosting this same event in 2013.
The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau Annual Celebration was sponsored by Iowa Network Services Family of Companies and Iowa Beverage Systems.
