Organizational Studies

The Organizational Studies degree at Grand View is a powerful combination of management, social science, and technical skills courses that create a unique interdisciplinary program. You will also have training in human relationships and diversity, two topics that are vital to the success of businesses and organizations in our modern world. Program Details

The Organizational Studies major integrates courses in business and public sector organization/management, social sciences, and technical skills. This major enables students to integrate studies that they have already completed into a baccalaureate degree major and to enrich these studies through exposure to course work in the arts, social sciences, humanities, and the sciences. Students are expected to consult with their advisors in developing their particular program of study.

Take either 12-15 credits in Technical Skills or take 12 additional credits from the following:

  • PSYC 101 General Psychology
  • SOCS 101 Introduction to Sociology
  • SOCS 315 Social Problems
  • Any 399 Internship or other approved course (prerequisites and outcomes vary by subject)
  • Up to 9 credits of graduate-level coursework from the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) degree*
12-15 credits
Take 8-11 credits additional coursework in Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, Communication, History, Political Science, or from the MSOL*
8-11 credits
Ensure that at least 45 credits will apply toward the major and at least 24 of those credits are upper division at the originating institution.

*Up to 9 credits total of graduate-level MSOL coursework can apply toward the major including application toward the leadership requirement and the electives sections. Undergraduate students interested in taking graduate-level courses must meet requirements as listed in the “Undergraduate Enrollment in Graduate Courses” policy in the catalog. Only the BSGR-prefix courses applicable to the MSOL degree have been approved as standard allowances.

Cathy Beck-Cross • Assistant professor of sociology, was selected as the recipient of the 2013 IEREA Distinguished Research Award by the Iowa Educational Research and Evaluation Association. Her paper is titled Individual, Family, School, and Community Predictors of High School Male Suicidal Behaviors: An Analysis of 2010 Iowa Youth Survey Data. 

Alex Zama • Assistant professor of business, has presented a paper at the Midwest Academy of Management Conference (MAM) titled: Impact of High-CSE CEO on Top Management Team Composition and Size. He has been a reviewer and presenter at MAM since 2009. He has also been a key note speaker at the Leadership Iowa Luncheon.
