Troubled Beauty is a juxtaposition of the physical splendor of Northern Ireland and the serious conflict visible through politically inspired murals used as territorial markers. The murals stand as a physical representation demonstrating how Northern Ireland still suffers from prejudice, violence, economic disparity, and most of all the separation that is a result of the fighting. Despite the tension and conflict, Northern Ireland is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring country with magnificent vistas, lush landscapes and hospitable people.
A 2012 alumna of Grand View University, Townsend served a year as a Young Adult Volunteer in Belfast, Northern Ireland, through the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Townsend’s job was to help serve the Belfast community in peace and reconciliation work, ministering to urban youth in the country’s largest city.
