ART & PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITS

For the Love of Food
Photographs by Sophie Saks
January 8 – February 18
Grand View University Student Center
Prairie Meadows Photography Gallery
Reception: Friday, Janauary 20 • 4:00–6:00 p.m.

Sophie Saks is a natural light portrait and commercial food photographer based in Des Moines, Iowa. Applying the same attention to detail and the fine-art approach she uses for portraiture in her food photography, Saks’ images provide a “fresh” perspective on what we eat. Simple compositions, shallow depth-of-field and bold colors are defining elements in her work.

After studying photography at Grand View and having spent many years working in restaurants, Saks became fascinated with food, the cooking process and even the people behind-the-scenes that create each plate. She decided to combine her passions for photography and food, and has since been providing on-location food styling and photography for Des Moines-area restaurants and vendors, as well as print and digital marketing services.

Moments Through My Lens
Photographs by Shane Abbitt
February 25 – April 9
Prairie Meadows Photography Gallery
Student Center, 2811 East 14th Street, Des Moines

An eclectic collection of Abbit's recent works. He says "my photography is simply an attempt to make an image worthy of capturing a viewer’s attention for more than a moment. My subjects are often athletes in action or birds in flight, but I also love the challenge of finding a unique perspective of a still subject or landscape."

A little irreverent, a lot talented, Maniacal 4 is dedicated to creating musical performances that not only entertain and engage, but challenge the limits of traditional concert presentation. The lively, acclaimed trombone quartet not only rocks the standard repertoire, but also embraces a wide variety of music from around the world and across eras. M4’s clever, insightful arrangements of music ranging from pop/rock and jazz to classical masterpieces bring new life to familiar tunes, often with a tongue-in-cheek playfulness that belies the technical aplomb of the group’s four, highly-trained trombonists – Nick Laufer, Carl Lundgren, Alex Dubrov, and Matt Jefferson. The four musicians got together as freshmen at the University of North Texas. Since the group’s official launch in 2006 Maniacal 4 has performed at music festivals on three continents. Maniacal 4 is performing at Grand View as part of the University's Nielsen Concert Series.
