Birru National Champion; Women's Team Finishes 12th at NAIA Championships


Grand View’s Obsie Birru won the 5000m to become a national champion at the NAIA Women’s Track & Field Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Birru won the event in a school record time of 16:51.67, five seconds in front of Azusa Pacific’s Lauren Jimison who defeated Birru in the same event last year. Earlier in the day, Birru took third in the Mile, running a 4:56.38, to earn All-American status.

The Distance Medley Relay team of Kara Keller, Mikaela Pruismann, Betsy Craig, and Birru placed fifth to earn All-American status. The team’s time of 12:02.68 was a new school record. Megan Higgins had a personal best and school record-setting performance in the shot put with a toss of 13.05m (42’ 9 ¾”) for 12th place. On Friday, junior Lauryn Camp placed fifth in the weight throw to earn All-American status. Camp's toss of 17.33m (56' 10 ¼") was also a new school record.

With a total of six All-Americans, the Viking women scored 19 points, tied with Southern Oregon, to place 12th overall in the team standings. It is the highest team finish in program history.
