Track & Field Takes Honors at Nationals
Viking senior Tyler Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) placed sixth in the men's shot put earning All-American honors at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Wells threw an indoor personal best and GV school record mark of 16.52m on his second throw in the competition which secured his spot as an All-American.
Grand View seniors Obsie Birru and Kara Keller both earned All-American honors on the final day of competition at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships
Birru kicked of the meet with a seventh place All-American finish in the Mile. Her time of 5:02.01 was a season's best mark. She came back a couple hours later in the 5000m run posting another season's best time of 17:27.19 placing third overall to earn her second All-American honor of the day.
Keller ran in the 800m final placing seventh in a time of 2:15.74 to earn her first individual NAIA All-American award.
The Viking women finished 12th overall in the team scoring with 19 points on the weekend.
Viking senior Lauryn Camp (Preston, Iowa) earned her third consecutive All-American honor in the weight throw placing second. She hit a personal best mark of 17.82m on her second throw in finals and broke her own school record. Sophomore teammate Colleen Frank (Eldora, Iowa) also earned All-American honors in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 16.47m placing her 8th overall.
Viking hurdler Laurel Murphy (Des Moines, Iowa) advanced through to the semifinals in the 60m hurdles where she placed 14thoverall. Freshman Dionna Reed (Rock Island, Ill.) also competed in the 60m hurdles placing 22nd.
