Nielsen Concert Series: Soya Vista Jazz Orchestra

Sunday, October 6, 3:00 p.m.
Student Center Viking Theatre, 2811 East 14th Street, Des Moines

Founded in 2006 by trombonist/arranger John Benoit, the Soya Vista Jazz Orchestra performs cool and mainstream jazz of the 1950s and 1960s. The eight-member ensemble draws upon the talents of some of the finest jazz musicians in central Iowa with performances that evoke the refined glamour of the “Cocktail Generation.” Audiences take delight in hearing the iconic sounds of this era – the swinging grooves of Peggy Lee, the sophisticated harmonies of Henry Mancini, the Brazilian rhythms of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the inspired mayhem of Louis Prima. Throughout central Iowa, the Soya Vista Jazz Orchestra has been featured on community and fine arts concert series, including five appearances on the Metro Arts Alliance’s Jazz in July series. In addition, the group has performed at gala events for both corporate and non-profit organizations. So, loosen your tie and slip off your heels as the Soya Vista Jazz Orchestra takes you back to the time of Pan Am airlines, pearl necklaces, and some of the most stylish music of the 20th-century.
