Sister Helen Prejean to visit the Grand View student exhibit at the Prairie Meadows Gallery Wednesday, May 7

Sister Helen Prejean, whose autobiographical novel Dead Man Walking was the inspiration for the film and opera of the same name, will visit the Grand View student exhibit, "17 Minutes," at the Prairie Meadows Gallery in the Rasmussen Center Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00 pm.

In partnership with the Des Moines Metro Opera, the students were asked to produce works in response to a line from the libretto: "Seventeen minutes. That's how long it takes to decide if a man should live or die."  Opera staff chose winners in three categories: prints, posters, and motion graphics. Best of Show was awarded to junior Mike Mittermeier for his relief print titled "Dead Man Walking."

Between June 28 and July 19, Des Moines Metro Opera will present five performances of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking at Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola, Iowa. Mr. Heggie will be present for the opening performance June 28. For more information:

Sister Helen will be on campus to visit with students participating in the exhibit, and to be interviewed by Michael Morain of the Des Moines Register.
