Job Description:
The faculty of the College of Liberal Arts at Concordia University Texas invites applications for a full-time teaching position in English at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. in English or related field or be enrolled in a doctoral program in English or related field. Responsibilities include teaching a range of upper and lower level courses in English literature, and introductory courses in Academic Research and Writing and Introduction to Literature. Some opportunities exist for teaching courses in an area of the candidate’s specialty. Concordia University Texas operates under the auspices of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and was founded on the principles of Lutheran ethos with a mission of developing Christian leaders. This position will begin on or before August 1, 2013. Position Details: •The full-time faculty load is 30 hours per academic year with 24 hours accomplished through teaching assignments. The remaining 6-credit expectation consists of advising, committee work, course development, and other duties. •This appointment enters in at the Initial Level of the agreements cycle, which carries a two-year renewal term, and is eligible for advancement in rank and appointment to the Continuing Level, which is Concordia’s implementation of tenure. •The assigned teaching load normally spans only the fall and spring semesters but with approval of the Chair and Dean may be spread across the full academic year and overload assignments for additional pay are permitted with approvals. Faculty members are expected to enrich their teaching strategies year-round and be available for development and administrative projects during the summer. Four weeks of vacation are granted to each faculty member, outside the assigned teaching periods. •Concordia expects a high level of quality interaction between students and faculty. The average class size is currently approximately 17 students, with the normal range begin only 9-40. Certain classes, including the Academic Research and Writing course, have set limits to reinforce this interactivity where higher levels of one-on-one interactions are required. •Computer literacy is required, and a willingness to develop online, hybrid, or other alternative delivery methods for courses is expected. •Additional expectations include being an active part of the Concordia community and growing the major in prominence, and in overall academic excellence. Faculty members are also expected to attend division, college, and faculty meetings; colloquia and lecture series; and extracurricular events.
Job Qualifications:
•Ph.D. in English literature or related field, or a Masters in English literature and enrollment in a Ph.D. program at the time of contract offer. •Demonstrated success in university-level teaching. •Commitment to research and scholarship in the discipline. •Applicants must have a strong commitment to Christian, liberal-arts undergraduate education. •Candidate must be Christian and a member of a recognized Christian church; preference will be given to Lutheran candidates.
