Job Description:
Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Science, the Lab Manager provides direct management and support to the University’s main campus science laboratories, including physics, biology and chemistry. Duties will include preparing, set-up, tear-down and cleaning associated with lab use, directing and supervising assigned student worker positions, maintaining equipment, ordering and storage of all materials and supplies, monitoring and ensuring safety in all lab spaces and training for equipment used, ensuring regulatory compliance for all spaces. Additionally, this position is a resource for all faculty to help improve the use of the labs, design of experiments to best use available resources and to remote centers that support on-site science lab spaces.
Job Qualifications:
Oversee the operations of all of the main campus science labs and their associated preparation and storage areas Make sure that materials needed for lab exercises are on hand and prepared in a timely manner Make sure that materials and equipment are properly secured after use and that labs and storage areas are kept in an orderly, clean and safe state Supervise student worker Lab Assistants, including seeking position approvals, hiring, training and assigning duties to these workers Maintain an up-to-date inventory (per EPA guidelines) of the labs and place orders as needed Insure that all safety procedures are followed by lab personnel and safety equipment maintained in work order. Conduct regular safety meetings and/or training on equipment and procedures for all lab users See to it that all of the labs are in compliance with any applicable EPA or OSHA regulations. Work with the faculty, especially the adjunct faculty to develop an appropriate set of lab exercises for the courses within the College and make sure that everything is in place to successfully complete those exercises Develop budget priorities for future acquisitions of equipment and materials. Manage assigned budgets and perform duties of Budget Officer Assist in the planning of future labs or renovations of existing labs Work with the Director of Facilities Management to resolve any maintenance or facilities issues that may arise within the labs Serve as a resource to Faculty, Staff and Students in developing and carrying out laboratory and field exercises and research, and to the remote centers on lab issues at those sites This position description is not intended to be, nor should it be interpreted to be, an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills or working conditions associated with this position. Position Requirements Demonstrated planning and organizational skills Demonstrated customer service skills Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, manage administrative projects and multi-task Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records Ability to work independently or as part of a team Ability to operate an IBM compatible computer and other standard office equipment (fax machine, copiers, scanners, etc.) Ability to interact with all levels of the organization Ability to navigate the Internet Demonstrated attention to detail when preparing laboratory materials and handling laboratory equipment General abilities: Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing s required for an office setting Maintain the security of confidential information Required Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline 2-3 years experience managing a laboratory Experience with EPA requirements for lab spaces and chemical storage/usage required The selected final candidate will be required to pass a full background screening.
