Job Description:
Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) AmeriCorps Program is currently recruiting full-time service members. There are 3 different components to this program that align to ultimately support school district initiatives to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates. A full-time member could choose one of the following focus areas: •Elementary Schools - A member would serve as a literacy and/or math tutor providing evidence-based strategies to increase the performance of students in those subjects. A member would also help develop and implement a volunteer management plan that would support both the program's goals and those of the school they serve in. •Middle Schools - A member, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, would develop and implement a mentoring program for sixth grade students at the school they serve in to improve student engagement and expose them to career and educational opportunities. •International Baccalaureate Schools - A member, in partnership with Community! Youth Concepts, would provide evidence-based service-learning programming at the school they serve in to increase student engagement and support the principles of real-world learning. AmeriCorps is a national service program committed to meeting the needs of our communities. AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance and may qualify for student loan forbearance during their term of service. Additionally, full-time members may be eligible to receive health care coverage and childcare assistance through AmeriCorps. After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service, members are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. The Education Award may be used to repay qualified student loans or to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education and training programs. The Education Award may be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended. Members at least 55 years of age at the beginning of their term of service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child. This would be an excellent opportunity for those interested in a career in education, retirees, or members of the community wanting to give back and make a difference in the lives of children. Member Type: Full-Time (FT) Service Term: September 3, 2013 - August 31, 2014 Minimum Number of Service Hours: 1700 Living Allowance for Term of Service: $12,100 Education Award: $5,550
