Job Description:
Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) AmeriCorps Program is currently recruiting full-time service members. There are 3 components to this program that support school district initiatives to increase graduation rates. A full-time member could choose one of the following focus areas: •Elementary Schools - A member will serve as a literacy and/or math tutor providing evidence-based strategies to increase the performance of students in those subjects. A member will also help develop, implement, and/or support a volunteer engagement plan that would meet both the goals of the program and those of the school they serve in. •Middle Schools - A member, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, will coordinate a mentoring program for sixth grade students to improve school engagement by supporting their transition to middle school and exposing them to career and educational opportunities. A member could also help support various after-school activities at their site. •International Baccalaureate Schools - A member, in partnership with Community! Youth Concepts, will provide evidence-based service-learning programming to increase student engagement and support the principles of real-world learning. A member could also help support various activities at their site. AmeriCorps is a national service program committed to meeting the needs of our communities. AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance and may qualify for student loan forbearance during their term of service. Additionally, full-time members may be eligible to receive health care coverage and childcare assistance through AmeriCorps. After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service, members are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. The Education Award may be used to repay qualified student loans or to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education and training programs. The Education Award may be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended. Members at least 55 years of age at the beginning of their term of service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child. This would be an excellent opportunity for those interested in a career in education, non-profit work, working with children, or community improvement by making a positive impact in the lives of children.
