Job Description:
Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) AmeriCorps Program is recruiting summer-only service members. There are 3 components to this program that support school district initiatives to increase graduation rates. A summer member could serve in one or more of the following focus areas: Elementary Schools - A member would serve as a literacy and/or math tutor providing evidence-based strategies to increase the performance of students in those subjects. Middle Schools - A member, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, would help implement activities designed to positively impact the transition of fifth grade students entering middle school in the fall. The goal of Pathways to Success is to improve student engagement by exposing students to career and educational opportunities. International Baccalaureate Schools - A member, in partnership with Community! Youth Concepts, would provide evidence-based service-learning programming at the school they serve in to increase student engagement and support the principles of real-world learning. AmeriCorps is a national service program committed to meeting the needs of our communities. AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance and may qualify for student loan forbearance during their term of service. Additionally, full-time members may be eligible to receive health care coverage and childcare assistance through AmeriCorps. After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service, members are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. The Education Award may be used to repay qualified student loans or to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education and training programs. The Education Award may be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended. Members at least 55 years of age at the beginning of their term of service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child. Member Type: Minimum Time (MT) Summer Service Term: May 19 - August 15 or June 2 - August 31, 2014 (there can be some flexibility with the start and end date for college students and school district employees) Minimum Number of Service Hours: 300 Living Allowance for Term of Service: $1,700 Education Award: $1,175
Job Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. United States citizen, a United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien 2. At least 18 years of age 3. High school diploma 4. Proficiency in computer technology; including word processing, database, and e-mail PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. College graduate or current student 2. Experience working with diverse backgrounds 3. Prior experience tutoring or working with students in a school setting 4. Bilingual or multilingual
