Alex Piedras to Serve on DMPS Committee
September 3, 2019
Alex Piedras, Multicultural and Community Outreach Director at Grand View, has been asked to serve on an important Des Moines Public Schools committee.
DMPS believes that when we engage families and the community as authentic education partners, the learning becomes more dynamic, and students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. They also believe equity should be foundational to all of our Des Moines Public Schools structures. Therefore, DMPS is engaging in problem-solving and action planning around newly adopted board goals with students, families, and the community.
These goals are:
- The percent of all third grade students on track in reading will increase from 52% to 72% by June 2023, as measured by FAST.
- The percent of black male third grade students on track in reading will increase from 35% to 72% by June 2023, as measured by FAST.
- The percent of black male students earning a B or higher in Algebra I by the end of 9th grade will increase from 17% to 35% by August 2023.
- Soon to be added: A goal around social-emotional learning.
Alex has been invited to be a member of the team that will be addressing social-emotional learning. Teams will include community members, parents/guardians, district leadership, principals, teachers, other district staff, students, and Heartland AEA staff.
Focused work on achieving board goals will support DMPS in reaching their vision of being the model of urban education in the United States. Congratulations Alex!
