Alejandro Piedras to serve on DMPS Stakeholder Engagement Advisory Committee
January 19, 2018
Alejandro Piedras, Director of Multicultural and Community Outreach at Grand View, has been a member of the Des Moines Public Schools Equity Committee and will now be joining the new Stakeholder Engagement Advisory Committee. This committee will align the work of the School Improvement Advisory Committee and Equity Committee.
The committee will review district academic and socio-emotional data, as well as needs assessment data in order to make recommendations to the board about the following components:
1. Major educational needs;
2. Student learning goals;
3. Long-range goals that include, but are not limited to, the state indicators that address reading, mathematics, and science achievement; and
4. Harassment or bullying prevention goals, programs, training, and other initiatives.
The committee is committed to keeping an eye on equity focus on how they serve students from all groups and determine their needs. Central to the work of this committee will be to gather input regarding data and current equity strategies, as well as sharing strategies and actions that the district is utilizing to become an equitable organization in order to decrease disproportionate opportunities and outcomes. The focus on equity will support DMPS in reaching their vision of being the model of urban education in the United States, which starts with taking a closer look at and systematically addressing where outcomes do not always meet our intentions of equipping all students for success.
Congratulations, Alex! This sounds like an amazing opportunity!
