Rachel Merrill-Schwaller at the Des Moines Art Center

March 7, 2023

Rachel Merrill-Schwaller, Associate Professor of Art at Grand View, will be showing work at the Des Moines Art Center on Friday, March 10 from 6-7 p.m. and Sunday, April 2 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Untitled (Slobberknocker) includes a multimedia installation and live performance exploring the complexity of submission. The performance asks questions about grief, power, and vulnerability. It presents a spectacle of defeat masked in humor.

Rachel will perform as part of the center's “75 Years of Iowa Art,” which represents Iowa history in a uniquely curated exhibition of storytelling.

"75 Years of Iowa Art" showcases decades of historical and contemporary art by artists born in Iowa and those
who lived and worked in the state at some point in their career. Presented in roughly chronological format spanning from
the early 20th century to the present, the exhibition contains approximately 100 objects representing painting, sculpture,
printmaking, video, photography, and ceramics. A select number of loans, newly commissioned performance artworks,
and collaborations with community partners will showcase the dynamism and diversity of Iowa’s art scene today.
