Roemer Earns National Awards At Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference
August 27, 2018
This past April, Grand View University Phi Beta Lambda President and State of Iowa Phi Beta Lambda Vice President Sarah Roemer qualified to go to the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference. At the State Leadership Conference, Sarah competed in Job Interview, Public Speaking, and Future Business Educator. She received first place in all three events, as well as being re-elected as the State of Iowa Phi Beta Lambda Vice President for the 2018-2019 school year.
At the National Leadership Conference, Sarah could only choose two out of the three events to compete in. With the help of family and PBL members, Sarah decided to compete in Job Interview and Public Speaking. On June 22, Sarah traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to compete in the National Leadership Conference. “The whole way to Baltimore I was practicing what I would say with potential job interview questions I would be asked. I also was practicing my speech since I was not allowed to read my speech off a piece of paper,” Sarah stated.
There are roughly 10,000 members in Phi Beta Lambda across the nation. For Sarah to qualify for the National Leadership Conference, she had to be amongst the top 10% of these members. When Sarah moved on to the final round for not only one event, but two events, Sarah was ranked in the top 5% of Phi Beta Lambda members. After being presented her top ten finishes in both of her events, Sarah is now ranked in the top 3% amongst Phi Beta Lambda members across the nation!
“Being a part of this organization has changed my life drastically. Before I joined PBL, I had anxiety to talk to strangers and to take tests. Basically, I had little confidence in myself and my potential of becoming an accountant. However, PBL changed all of that! I am able to talk to anyone about anything and I feel confident with everything I do,” Sarah says.
With the help of Phi Beta Lambda, Sarah will be graduating in April of 2019, a year earlier than expected, with a Bachelor’s in Accounting and a Bachelor’s in Finance. Sarah plans to go on to receive her Master’s in Accounting and receive her CPA designation. In her last year here at Grand View, Sarah will be President of Grand View University’s Phi Beta Lambda and Vice President for the State of Iowa Phi Beta Lambda. “I want to make a difference in people’s lives, just like Phi Beta Lambda changed mine. I realized after joining this organization that part of my American Dream was to help others accomplish their goals. This will continue to be a lifelong goal of mine,” Sarah stated.
Congratulations to Sarah Roemer on receiving 5th place in Public Speaking and 7th place in Job Interview in the nation amongst Phi Beta Lambda members! You have not only represented and made Grand View University very proud, but the State of Iowa as well!
