Start Here: Games in the Gallery

January 16, 2019

The Prairie Meadows Gallery at Grand View University is currently displaying "Start Here: Games in the Gallery" until February 15, 2019.

The works in this exhibition highlight the elements and principles of visual design that are used in family games. The images shown here are primarily selected from mid-twentieth century games, as reflected in the use of color and pattern. Many of these games may seem familiar, and some might be obscure, but as viewers we can all find connections to the experience of playing in our past.

Game playing as a community activity can be traced back through history to ancient Egypt, and one of the common properties that runs through that entire timeline is the use of certain visual elements to signify the experience of play. As you observe the game pieces, boards and boxes on display here, you will undoubtedly recognize parts of your own community experience, and perhaps also see these elements with a fresh eye.
