Students Attend National Association of Social Workers Legislative Day

February 18, 2020

Grand View social work students participated in the National Association of Social Workers-Iowa Chapter Legislative Day on Tuesday, February 11. As a part of SWRK 405-Social Welfare Policy and Practice, taught by Dr. Cathy Beck-Cross, the 29 students prepared by identifying a bill under consideration in the legislature, researching the underlying issues related to the bill, tracking its progress through the house and/or senate, and developing a fact sheet to educate legislators on the content of the proposed legislation.

Upon arrival at the statehouse, students advocated their perspective with legislators affiliated with the bill. Bills examined by students related to issues such as loss of commercial drivers license for those convicted of human trafficking, suicide prevention efforts in public schools, educating patients on opioids prior to prescription, provision of menstrual products in state facilities, increasing the minimum wage, requirements for school districts when serving students with seizure disorders, smoking in motor vehicles when a minor is present, and allowing emergency services personnel to carry concealed weapons. Also participating in the day was Myke Selha, social work faculty member.
