Data Science

Businesses and organization are realizing the power of big data and that being a successful company means using data to your advantage.

But data scientists are in short supply since this field is still relatively new. Grand View’s Data Science graduates will have the advantage of starting a career path in which there are more open jobs than qualified candidates to fill them!

Grand View is located in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa's largest city and fastest growing metro in the Midwest. This gives you an advantage as there are dozens of companies located just minutes from campus looking for talent. Grand View students benefit from these local connections via our robust internship and job-finding network.

Grand View’s program is designed to provide you with the technical skills you need to analyze and communicate complex data. With its focus on technical foundations, within a liberal arts context, the coursework emphasizes programming, statistics, math and some elements of social science.

What is Data Science?

Data Science is a relatively new field. In many settings, Data Science has become an umbrella term encompassing data analytics, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), data engineering, and other related disciplines. Data scientists are generalists in application and require deep mathematical and statistical skills as well as skills in computer science, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

Bureau of Labor statistics show that data and mathematical science occupations are projected to grow by 31% by 2030.

Why Grand View?

  • Data Science is one of the fastest growing occupations in Iowa
  • A solid mix of core competencies the industry seeks in data science, problem solving and communication
  • An interdisciplinary program with faculty collaborating across departments
  • Valuable internships in Des Moines

Did You Know?

Salaries for data scientists vary by employment sector and geography, but median entry-level salaries are generally reported to be in the range of $90,000. Opportunities exist across virtually all sectors, public and private.

According to quanthub.com, a data skills hiring and training platform, there are three times more data science job postings than their are qualified candidates. Bureau of Labor statistics data show that data and mathematical science occupations are projected to grow by 31% by 2030, compared to the average growth projected for all occupations of <8%.
