Application Questions

How do I apply?
Simply fill out the summer intern housing application.
What is the deadline for applying?

While there isn’t a deadline for applying, housing is first come, first served. We would encourage you to fill out the housing application contract as soon as possible and before our earliest move-in date, which is May 20, 2024.

Is there a minimum length of stay?
Yes. The minimum length of stay is 30 days.
How long can I stay on campus?

Move-out day is July 26, 2024. Extended housing into August may be available as space permits. Be sure to include your extended date request when filling out the housing application contract. If you’ve already submitted the application and did not include an extended date, let us know as soon as possible to see if space is still available.

Can I cancel or make changes to my application once it's submitted?

Changes to any submitted applications can be made until May 20, 2024 (our first day of housing). After this date, no changes to your application can be made and you are required to pay rent for all days listed in your application. You may also cancel your application until May 1, 2024. Any payments received before this date will be refunded. After this date, you may still cancel your application, but you will be required to pay rent for all days listed in your application and any payments received will not be refunded.

Is a deposit required and if so, is it refundable?

A $200 deposit is required to solidify your housing placement and can be paid online. Select “Housing Deposit” from the “Pay” drop-down menu and “Summer 2024” for your “Start Term.” This is refundable upon move-out as long as your balance is paid to date and your room is in good condition. Return of deposits are typically processed and become available mid-September, subsequent to review of any applicable property damage and/or outstanding balance. If you need to cancel your application before May 1, 2024 and have already paid your deposit, we will refund the $200. If you decide to terminate your contract, you will forfeit the $200 housing deposit if you do not notify us in writing by May 1, 2024.

I've submitted my application and paid my deposit. What are my next steps?

You’re good to go! We will be in touch in late spring with your housing placement. If you haven’t reviewed our housing options and what to bring, please do so. We will also communicate with you shortly before your scheduled move-in day with move-in details. Lastly, if you have any changes to make to your application before May 20, let us know as soon as possible.

We do not guarantee that any preference will be approved, but will do our best to accommodate you. We do our best to place summer interns together, but you may also be placed with Grand View summer residents. If you are not willing to live with Grand View students, you may select “no” in the appropriate section on your application. Please note that this may affect our ability to accommodate you for the summer if spaces are limited.

Are there single person apartment options?

We do not have any single person apartment options. While you will be sharing the apartment with other residents, please note that each resident has her/his own bedroom in all of our apartments.

When will I receive my housing placement and roommate information?

We typically send out housing placements and roommate information late April. It will come by email. Please note that placements may change even after receiving your initial placement.

Are laundry services provided?

App-operated washers and dryers are located in every residence hall on campus.

Where do I park if I will have a car on campus?

Parking is available directly outside both of our apartment buildings. It is free to park on campus; you will just need to get a parking decal during check-in. You will need your license plate number, and the make and model of your car to get your decal.

What dining options are available?

There are several food service options available.

The Student Dining Center, located on the second floor of the Student Center, is the main dining location on campus and offers all you care to eat full service dining, including a Mediterranean kitchen offering pizza and pasta dishes, a produce market and deli, an All-American grill as well as an exhibition station. Hours will vary throughout the summer, but are typically 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. for breakfast, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. for lunch, and 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. for dinner, including some service on the weekends.

Grand View Express, on the first floor of the Student Center, offers access to a variety of snacks and beverages, specifically tailored to students on the go. Hours during the summer are typically 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday - Thursday, and 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Friday. Summer guests are welcome to pay with cash or credit card at each of these locations.

What is my address and how do I receive mail?

The mailing address, which includes USPS mail and shipping services (UPS, FedEx, etc.) for all students is:

Student Name
Student Box Number
2811 East 14th Street
Des Moines, IA 50316

You will receive your box number upon check-in. The U.S. Postal Service will deliver all addressed mail to the Student Center. Campus Services delivers mail to student mailboxes, located in the Student Center. Mail is distributed weekdays by 4 p.m. when offices are open.

Campus Services will notify you by email of any packages that arrive for you. If you are not able to pick up your package before Campus Services closes, you can let them know by responding to their email. They will then take your package to Campus Security for you to pick up when you get back to campus. Campus Security operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is located on the first floor of the Johnson Wellness Center.

Are pets allowed in the residence halls?

No, except for fish in aquariums of 15 gallons or less, or animals that have been approved as accommodations through Disability Services.

How do I gain access into my building, apartment, and bedroom?

The Grand View ID card you receive will grant you access to your building and apartment. Your ID picture will be taken during check-in and you will be given your ID card then. A lost ID will cost $15 to replace. Card access will be turned off on the end date you list on your application. You are not required to turn in your ID upon check-out.

You will also receive a hard key at check-in which will give you access to your individual bedroom. A lost key will cost $75 to replace. You will be required to turn in your key upon check-out. You will be charged $75 if a key is not turned in.

Is campus safe?

We have security officers on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number to contact security is (515) 263-6000. Residential buildings are locked at all times and have ID card access to residents. Emergency phones are located throughout campus and are directly connected to the Des Moines Police Department. Escorts are available by campus security at any time. Cameras also are used in our residential parking lots to add security. Additional information is available on the campus crime report.

When and where do I check-in once I arrive to campus? Can I check-in on a weekend?

You must check-in between 8:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, and 8:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Friday, in our student center on your first day of living on campus. At check-in, you’ll get a variety of information regarding living on campus, your ID, your mailbox information, and a parking pass if you’ll have a car on campus. For this reason, it is important that check-in take place during these hours when our offices are open. We understand that certain travel restrictions can make this a challenge so accommodations for alternate check-in dates and times can be made.
