Dr. Josh Call Publishes Two New Volumes in Digital Game Studies
January 14, 2026
Josh Call, Ph.D., Professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Grand View, has published a new two-volume edited collection with Bloomsbury Academic as part of his ongoing book series, Approaches to Digital Game Studies.
The newly released volumes, Emerging Genres: New Formations of Games and Epistemic Genres: New Formations in Play, represent several years of research and collaboration that began during Dr. Call’s sabbatical. The books mark volumes ten and eleven in the series, an important milestone in a long-running scholarly project examining how digital and video games function as cultural, social, and expressive forms.
As digital and video games continue to expand and become embedded in mainstream entertainment and media, critical academic exploration of these forms has become increasingly important. Together, the two volumes explore how games create meaning through their structures, genres, and mechanics, while also examining the broader social, cultural, and political questions they raise.
Dr. Call also collaborated with Grand View colleague Thomas Lecaque on a chapter in Epistemic Genres titled “Death in the New World: Necropolitical Games,” which explores how games engage themes of death, power, and political meaning.
Both volumes are available through Bloomsbury Academic and contribute to an internationally recognized body of work advancing the study of digital games.
