Dr. Thomas Lecaque Receives Two Prestigious Research Grants

June 22, 2026

Dr. Thomas Lecaque, Associate Professor of History at Grand View University, has been awarded two competitive research grants to support his ongoing book project, Holy War Rhetoric in Colonial America, 1688–1761.

The project examines how religious language and ideas of holy war shaped political and military conflicts in colonial America during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Through extensive archival research, Lecaque's work explores the ways religious rhetoric influenced colonial identity, warfare, and relationships within the Atlantic world.

Lecaque received a Charles W. Wendell Research Grant from the New Netherland Institute. The grant supports research related to the Dutch colonial experience and the history of New Netherland, helping scholars access important archival materials and advance original historical scholarship.

In addition, he was awarded a Memorial Libraries Research Fellowship from Historic Deerfield. The fellowship provides researchers access to Historic Deerfield’s extensive collections and archives, which are recognized as important resources for the study of early American history and culture.

The research conducted through these grants will contribute to the completion of Holy War Rhetoric in Colonial America, 1688–1761, adding new perspectives to the study of religion, politics, and warfare in colonial America.

Congratulations!
