FAFSA Filing Date Change

September 16, 2016

The next FAFSA® will be available on October 1, 2016 as opposed to January 1, 2017. In addition to this permanent change (for the 2017-18 year and beyond), students will report income information from an earlier tax year. The priority deadline has also changed – from March 1 to January 15.

Filing your FAFSA for the 2017-18 academic year will be easier since you will be using the same tax information you did for the 2016-17 academic year – and the data can be easily imported into your FAFSA with just a few clicks from the IRS’s Data Retrieval Tool.

Starting this fall, new students filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2017-18 school year will also be able to do so as early as October 1, 2016. In addition to this permanent change, students will report income information from an earlier tax year.

This filing date change more closely aligns with the admissions calendar. You will be able to apply for financial aid at the same time you are applying to schools. By learning what your financial aid offers will be earlier, you will have more time to evaluate your options and make a more informed decision.
