Grand View Social Work Students Participate in Iowa Chapter Legislative Day
February 29, 2016
Grand View social work students participated in the National Association of Social Workers-Iowa Chapter Legislative Day on Tuesday, February 23. As a part of SWRK 405-Social Welfare Policy and Practice, taught by Dr. Cathy Beck-Cross, students prepared for the day and identified a bill under consideration in the legislature, researched the underlying issues related to the bill, tracked its progress through the house and/or senate, and developed a fact sheet to advocate for or against the content of the proposed legislation.
Upon arrival at the statehouse, students advocated their perspective with legislators affiliated with the bill. Bills examined related to expanding the definition of child abuse to include human trafficking of minors, including coverage of assessment and treatment of eating disorders in insurance coverage, and exempting African-style hair braiding from the definition of cosmetology. Also participating in the day was Myke Selha, social work faculty member.
