Grand View University Students Present at Civic Action Academy
February 17, 2026
Grand View students Hannah Brandt and Maddie Cunningham represented Grand View University at the annual Civic Action Academy, a regional conference that brings together college students from across Iowa and Minnesota to explore how their talents and experiences can address real community needs.
Hosted by the Seed Coalition, the Civic Action Academy challenges students to move from the idea that “someone should do something” to the belief that “I can do this,” empowering participants to see themselves as active leaders and problem-solvers in their communities.
Brandt and Cunningham presented a session titled "Transforming Pain Into Purpose Through Leadership," inviting fellow students to reflect on how personal challenges can become a source of strength and motivation. Their presentation focused on discovering how adversity can inspire growth, resilience, and purposeful leadership that drives meaningful change.
During the session, attendees explored ways to use their own experiences to lead with empathy, authenticity, and purpose. By connecting personal stories with practical leadership strategies, the presenters encouraged participants to recognize the value of lived experience in shaping compassionate and effective community leaders.
The Civic Action Academy serves as a collaborative space for students to identify community needs, share perspectives, and develop the confidence to take action. Brandt and Cunningham’s presentation highlighted how reflection, resilience, and personal growth can become powerful tools for creating positive impact both on campus and beyond.
