Grand View Communication students attended the Iowa College Media Association awards ceremony last week.

Jesus Martinez-Aviles has been honored as the best student journalist at Iowa’s colleges and universities, according to a panel of judges with the Iowa College Media Association.

Martinez-Aviles was selected as the Pat Pisarik Student Journalist of the Year by the ICMA. The third-year Communication and Media Practice major and editor for Viewfinder Media received the award Thursday during the annual Iowa College Media Association awards ceremony. The award is given in honor of the late Pat Pisarik, an ICMA founding member and longtime journalism professor. Martinez-Aviles was recognized from among four nominees and hundreds of student journalists at more than a dozen colleges and universities for his excellent reporting work across print, web, video, and audio platforms.

“This award not only celebrates Jesus’ outstanding contributions but also emphasizes the excellence of our GV students. I believe that his achievement will serve as an inspiration to many of our students in the Communication and Media Practice major,” said Dr. Erin Kim-Cho, Assistant Professor in Communication and Media Practice.

Grand View students came home from the annual ICMA ceremony with several other prestigious awards, including:

  • First Place, Best Video Newscast
