MSAT Students Receive Emergency Training

November 7, 2017

Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) students received hands on emergency procedure training in the Center for Learning, Grand View University’s Nursing Simulation laboratory. “We are very fortunate to be able to work with the Nursing Department and coordinate opportunities for our students to perform emergency medical procedures in a simulated environment” said Dr. Viesselman, Program Director for the MSAT.

The students practiced oropharyngeal airways with bag-valve masks and taking rectal temperatures on simulation manikins. Both procedures are new areas of emphasis in athletic training programs and are important skills to provide advanced care for patients in emergency settings. “No other professional athletic training program in the state of Iowa has access to these types of facilities. It is a rare opportunity for our students to learn advanced care techniques to help prepare them to save lives” stated Dr. Viesselman.
