Social Work Students Visit Capitol

March 5, 2019

Grand View social work students participated in the National Association of Social Workers-Iowa Chapter Legislative Day on Wednesday, February 27. As a part of SWRK 405-Social Welfare Policy and Practice, taught by Dr. Cathy Beck-Cross, students prepared for the day and identified a bill under consideration in the legislature, researched the underlying issues related to the bill, tracked its progress through the house and/or senate, and developed a fact sheet to educate legislators on the content of the proposed legislation.

Upon arrival at the statehouse, students advocated their perspective with legislators affiliated with the bill. Bills examined by students related to interest rates for federal loans, mistreatment of domestic animals, sexual orientation change efforts, legal age for vaping products, use of electronic recordings in criminal and juvenile cases, age appropriate information regarding dating violence and prevention, and human trafficking as child abuse. Also participating in the day was Myke Selha, social work faculty member.
