GV Social Work Students Attend Legislative Day
March 7, 2017
Grand View social work students participated in the National Association of Social Workers-Iowa Chapter Legislative Day on Tuesday, February 21. As a part of SWRK 405-Social Welfare Policy and Practice, taught by Dr. Cathy Beck-Cross, students prepared for the day and identified a bill under consideration in the legislature, researched the underlying issues related to the bill, tracked its progress through the house and/or senate, and developed a fact sheet to educate legislators on the content of the proposed legislation.
Upon arrival at the statehouse, students advocated their perspective with legislators affiliated with the bill. Bills examined by students related to civil protective orders in sexual abuse cases, family leave benefits for adoptive parents, child care assistance to low income parents, and supplemental school funding for districts serving low-income pupils. Also participating in the day was Myke Selha, social work faculty member.
