Upgrading the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center
January 1, 2018
Thanks to a $225,000 gift from Chuck and Jaina Johnson, the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center will undergo much-needed improvements this spring. Fifteen years ago Grand View took a major leap forward with the opening of the Johnson Wellness Center. While expectations for the building were high, no one could have predicted the impact. The transformation that has taken place for students, faculty, staff and the entire Des Moines community has been nothing short of incredible. The University has gone from offering seven sports to 25, and the number of student-athletes is six times what it was in 2002. Johnson, the former CEO of Pioneer Hi-Bred and its board of trustees chair, has been a longtime supporter of Grand View through his gifts to the Rasmussen Center, Student Center and the Grand View Fund.
Updates are scheduled for Spring 2018 and include:
- Replacing the Mondo floor in the field house
- Installing bleacher system in the field house
- Adding a sound system in the field house
The upgrades will be put to use as Grand View hosts the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Tournament April 18 – 21. This will be the first time the National Invitational will be held in the state of Iowa.
“We’re thrilled to be hosting the 2018 and 2019 Men's volleyball National Tournament,” said Grand View coach Donan Cruz. “Men's Volleyball is on the rise in the NAIA and we want to help grow the game by hosting a great National tournament.
“Hosting the men's volleyball championships will be a win-win for the metro area. Of course, we will expose players and fans from all around the country (and world) to our great city,” said Grand View President Kent Henning. “Equally important, we will be exposing our community to a fun and exciting sport.”
