 ABOUT

Dr. Matthew Trieber, LPC, CRC, is a Counselor Education and Supervision scholar whose path to academia began in public service, not the therapy suite. Before becoming a clinician, he spent nearly a decade as an elected representative to the Vermont State House, where he served on the Appropriations, Human Services, and Judiciary committees and helped shape state policy on opioid response, poverty reduction, and mental health services. His desire to take a more hands-on approach to helping his neighbors eventually drew him from politics into counseling. He and his husband, Andrew, relocated from Vermont to Alabama so Matt could pursue his PhD at the University of Alabama, and he now provides direct clinical services for low-income clients while researching counselor identity and emerging therapeutic approaches. Outside of his professional life, Matt is an enthusiastic tabletop board gamer, an amateur language learner, and a documentary devotee who is always looking for the next music concert or international trip to plan.
