Public Health

The public health major at Grand View University prepares students to promote health in individuals and communities. Public health is a broad major, including components of biology, epidemiology, kinesiology, economics, psychology, statistics, business and communication. Upon completing the program, students will be prepared for a career in a governmental agency, non-profit organization, educational setting or business; as a community health worker, health education specialist, or worksite health promotion professional; or to enter a Master’s in Public Health program.

What You Can Expect

In the Public Health program, we repeatedly expose you to career opportunities. The major was designed to provide you with the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for success in your future endeavors. You will gain real-world, hands-on, experiential learning during your culminating internship experience.

This field is changing quickly in response to the aging population, increased cost of health care, and the understanding of the important role lifestyle factors play in one’s health. 

Program Details

The Public Health curriculum seeks to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to become leaders in the health profession, helping improve the health of people and communities. Students will become knowledgeable about the public health system in the U.S. and abroad as well as emerging public health concerns such as pandemic infectious diseases and new threats to the environment.

Public health concerns such as decreasing life expectancy, increasing obesity rate, and managing infectious disease outbreaks are of increasing concern in the United States. As such, there is a need for passionate, productive individuals in the field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), overall employment of health education specialists and community health workers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.
