Dr. Adriana J. LaGier, Professor of Biology at Grand View, is featured in the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) blog for her innovative approach to helping students turn note-taking into an active learning experience.
In her article, “When Note-Taking Becomes Learning: The Two-Notebook Method,” LaGier shares a teaching strategy she uses in her biology courses at Grand View. The method is designed to transform note-taking from a passive activity into an active part of the learning process.
Through the two-notebook approach, students use their notes to engage with course material, organize information and deepen their understanding of biology concepts. The strategy encourages students to take a more active role in processing and revisiting what they learn in class.
Sometimes, the most profound learning doesn’t happen while the instructor is talking. It happens when the student sits down with their messy notes, opens a blank page, and decides to figure out what it all actually means.
