August 17, 2026

Dr. Michael LaGier, Grand View University Professor of Biology, recently published an article in Academe examining the growing trend of “productivity theater” in higher education and its potential impact on institutions, employees and students.

In his article, “The Hidden Costs of Productivity Theater in Higher Education,” LaGier explores how workplace practices that create the appearance of productivity without meaningful progress can ultimately undermine an institution’s strategic goals, projects and student success.

The article reflects LaGier’s growing interest in human resources and the ways workplace culture and organizational practices can influence the effectiveness and well-being of faculty and staff.

Academe is published by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), an organization focused on academic freedom, shared governance and the well-being of faculty and higher education professionals.
