Multimedia Career Seminar Takes Learning Beyond the Classroom

November 17, 2025

Students in Grand View University’s Communication and Media Practice Career Seminar class took their learning off campus on November 6 as they joined the American Advertising Federation of Des Moines’ annual Agency Crawl. They participated alongside peers from Iowa State University, DMACC, and Simpson College, gaining valuable exposure to the region’s dynamic advertising and media landscape.

Sponsored by Athene, the event gave students the opportunity to tour several leading agencies and organizations including Pella, Athene, KCCI, Two Rivers Marketing, and Lessing Flynn. At each stop, they took part in guided tours, networking sessions, and behind the scenes conversations that highlighted real world workflows and expectations.

Throughout the day, students met with creative directors, copywriters, storytellers, digital media professionals, PR leaders, and account executives. These interactions offered an inside look at how strategy, creativity, and collaboration drive successful campaigns.

“It was inspiring to see our students engage with industry professionals whose stories and advice will shape their next steps,” said Dr. Erin Kim Cho, Department Chair of Communication and Media Practice. “These connections often spark internships, mentorships, and even future job opportunities. It is an invaluable bridge between the classroom and career.”

Grand View University extends a special thank you to Joanna Schroeder, adjunct professor and AAF Des Moines board member, for connecting students with this hands-on professional experience.
