Sport Management

Follow your passion for sports! The Sport Management major is a perfect fit if you want to learn management skills that will lead you to occupational opportunities in the sports and recreational industry. You'll combine the knowledge you gain in several majors, such as business administration, health promotion and physical education.

The curriculum, dedicated faculty and experiential learning enable students to develop content knowledge, professional dispositions, ethical-decision making, reflective thinking and written and oral communication skills. These skills will carry you forward as you prepare to be an agent of change in the sport business industry through graduate studies, professional opportunities and your personal life

Program Details

The Sport Management program is designed to introduce students to management skills and occupational opportunities. The major will allow students to utilize a business administration background and apply this knowledge to the sports and recreational industry. The program includes course work in management and administration, public relations, sports marketing, sports law, and sport psychology. The internship is an integral part of this program and provides students with necessary field experiences.

Sports Management Minor

The minor in Sport Management provides you with a core set of skills in sport management, including literacy in sport marketing, sport finance, personnel management, and the sociological aspects of sport. Students will also have a wide variety of electives from which to choose.

This minor is designed for students with an interest in the theory of the sporting context and/or students who will use principles of the sport field in their anticipated profession.

AWARDS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Dr. Scott Bull has 20 years of experience in the professional sports industry, including 16 years in the National Football League as well as minor league baseball and hockey. He has presented research on sport management internships at the Annual Conference for the North American Society for Sport Management.  

Mark Slavic has experience at Division 1 collegiate athletic departments, working in sports information and athletic communications. He has conducted research with minor league baseball teams and has presented research extensively at several national conferences.

Recent graduates are in exciting positions in the sports industry, including Drew Schneider, Recruiting Coordinator-compliance at the Iowa State Athletic Department; Austin Strawhacker, Director of the Bulldog Club at Drake University; and Haleigh Biancalana, Event Manager at the Iowa Events Center.

Is a sport management degree the right fit for you?

The Sport Management Major is for people who have a real interest in the business of sports. When you go to a football or baseball game, you’ll see a much larger “food chain” around it. You’ll learn the workings of the stadium, concessions, ticketing, marketing, equipment, turf management and every other aspect of the sports or venues you serve. The Sport Management degree will enable you to have a fulfilling career in the sports field without having to be an athlete.
